Brickhouse Archives

Welcome to Brickhouse archives
I thought it would be cool to have a little blog on my site about my time with Brickhouse.   Its been almost 15 years since I joined them back in 2005. I would like to share some music, stories, and maybe a few secrets about my time with the band.

Some people may wonder why Brickhouse didn’t release very much music to their fans to take home over the years.  I believe it really came down to a couple of things.  We had 2 very comfortable house gigs playing 4 nights a week and many other corporate shows, weddings, mini tours, and parties that kept us busy. We even played early shows before the late night shifts. Of course Families and relationships would take up our time as well.  There just wasn't enough time in the day to get it together.

Back in 2003, I started working at The Yale as a sound tech and Brickhouse was the house band on Sundays from 9 to 12am.  They had a couple of cd’s they sold off stage. One was a live cd recorded at The Yale sometime in 2000 and another was recorded by Ray Keesh called Kinny’s Cabin,  recorded sometime in 2001.
In February of 2004 they replaced their original drummer Geordie Bolton with Darryl Mayes, (previously with Colin James).  At that time, The Yale acquired  a late night license that allowed them to be open till 4am.  So then Brickhouse was to fill that insane time slot from  1 to 4 on Friday’s and Saturdays,  and they still played the Sunday Shift as well.   This time slot would eventually change to 12:30 to 3.  4am was just too damn late.  BTW,   "we're gonna play till 4 am" continues to be a meme on stage for Rob.   Anyways, one evening in the spring of 2004, I decided to record the band straight out of the main FOH mix into the reel to reel machine.  You didn't see many reel to reels anymore recording bands in a night club.    It was an Akai 2 track. The one in the youtube vid.   The recording actually turned out pretty good and the band thought so as well.  So I convinced them to come down to
Turtle Recording in White Rock, to record a 3 song demo on 24 track analogue, 2" tape.    15 songs and many overdub sessions later,   Ruby was released in Nov of 2004.

About a year later, (October) , their drummer couldn't make a Kamloops show and they asked me to join them.  The rest is history. For about 6 years I was mixing the 9pm to 12am shift at The Yale, and then jumping behind the kit to play the late night shift with Brickhouse.  In the fall of 2008, we went into Turtle and recored a  5 song Christmas cd, released in December of 2008.   We continued burning the candle playing 4 to 6 shows a week for a long time. Then in the fall of 2011, the Yale came to an end,  and so did the late shows.  In those years leading up to the Yale's closure , I had recorded several live shows with the intention of making a few live albums but I never got the support from the band to release them.   But  in the fall of 2015,  I got the band interested in going back to Turtle Recording to record a studio album.
Our 4 nights a week had disappeared and I think we were able to concentrate on a project.   It was long over due and our fans needed something to take home. We released Future in March of 2016 and did the album release at the RIO theatre.  Our hopes would be that we would get some attention from some management companies and or record labels, but it really never panned out that way.

So here we are.  It's 2019 and BH has entered into a new realm.   Some of the band members are moving on to new ventures.   None of us really know for sure what the future holds.  So Im going to go through those archives from The Yale Hotel recordings and pull out the good stuff, and perhaps make a few copies for the fans.
Cheers!
